Central hotels in Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela is one of the best travel destinations in Spain. The city is wonderful, so you will almost certainly enjoy your time there. Even more so if you find the right hotel – for that reason, here is a guide to the best hotels in Santiago de Compostela!

To be more specific, we are looking into the best hotel in different price ranges. First, we have a very central and popular hotel at a standard price. This is our most recommended place. Afterward, you’ll find a review of a low-budget affordable hotel, and in the end, we take a look at a more luxurious hotel for the travelers that don’t mind spending a bit extra.

In other words, there will be a hotel option for everyone, no matter what your budget is.

Read about each of these hotels below – we looked into each one of them.

Further down, you will also find some tips for which area is best to stay in Santiago de Compostela.

Central hotel in Santiago

Compostela Hotel – book here.

This is our favorite hotel in Santiago de Compostela. Simply because it is central, affordable, quiet, clean and has nice rooms and nice service. It really doesn’t get much better, so if you want to stay at a good hotel, just choose this one and don’t look back.

From the Compostela Hotel, it takes only around 5 minutes to walk to the Cathedral. It’s also very close to the wonderful Alameda Park. You also have the food market close, several beautiful churches, squares and museums. Most of the surrounding streets are beautiful, so it’s a pleasure to walk around in the area.

The rooms are spacious and clean. Some of them have balconies which is really nice. There’s daily roomservice, the reception is open at all hours, and there are plenty of extra facilities as well.

Previous guests of the hotel rate it as 9 out of 10 (on average). A very solid rating for this central hotel. Prices for standard rooms start around 70 euros per night – more than reasonable for a hotel with this kind of quality. Highly recommended.

Affordable hotel in Santiago

Hotel Entrecercas – book here.

This is a solid alternative option if you don’t want to spend as much money but still want a nice and cozy stay. We are big fans of this hotel as well.

The main benefit is the price. The average price per night is 60 euros, but that is the average price. It means that oftentimes, you can book rooms for even less. It’s not uncommon to see standard rooms at around 35-40 euros at Hotel Entrecercas. For that reason, it’s a very good option for those that travel on a light budget.

Previous guests rate it 9,2 out of 10 on average. The location is amazing, right in the heart of the city. This hotel is especially popular among couples. However, single travelers, families and groups are also more than welcome to stay here, as the hotel has enough facilities to accommodate everybody.

The only downside is that the hotel is less flexible with check-in and check-out. You have to check-in between 2 pm and 9 pm. And checkout is before 11.30 am. Aside from that, there is nothing to complain about, and the service is as good as it gets for a hotel in this price range.

And by the way – the hotel serves a nice cup of coffee, much better than most hotels!

Luxurious hotel in S. de Compostela

Palacio del Carmen – book here.

Okay, so we already covered our favorite central hotel and an affordable option. But what about an option for the travelers who want the best of the best? Well, we are getting to that now!

Palacio del Carmen is an interesting hotel, to say it mildly. It used to be a monastery but has been changed into a hotel since. The rooms are beautiful and classy. Some of them have balconies from where you can see the big Cathedral. It also has an indoor pool, really delicious food, and great overall service.

It’s located just a bit west of the typical tourist area of Santiago, but that can be a good thing. The Cathedral is within a walking distance of just 10-15 minutes, depending on your speed. Most other sights can be seen within the same amount of time, so you’re close enough to everything – a big advantage.

Palacio del Carmen is rated as a 5-star hotel. In our opinion, it lives up to it, and we highly recommend staying here.

Prices are surprisingly good for a hotel of this kind. The prices start at 80 euros per night. Realistically, you’ll probably end up spending 100-100 euros per night, since that is the average, but that is still a bargain for a five star hotel with such beautiful surroundings.

Hostels

Not surprisingly, there are also a lot of hostels in Santiago de Compostela.

Obviously, most pilgrims who walk the Camino stay in hostels along the way. A lot of them do the same upon arrival in Santiago, although others choose to treat themselves with a nice hotel at the end of the trip.

If you do want a hostel, you have plenty of options. Prices are generally low, and it’s never a problem to find a bed for less than 20 euros. At times it can be even cheaper. It depends from hostel to hostel, although summertime and Eastertime are usually a bit more expensive than the rest of the year.

You don’t necessarily have to book a hostel in advance, as you can probably find one upon arrival. However, if you want to be on the safe side and book it prior to your arrival, we recommend checking Booking.com.

Generally speaking, the best hostels are located in the old part of the city. But you will also find several nice options in the modern part of Santiago de Compostela.

Where to stay in Santiago de Compostela

We recommend staying in the old part of the city. It’s the most beautiful area, the streets are magical, and in fact the old city area is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Any hotel in this area can be recommended. Especially Hotel Compostela, our favorite hotel that we described at the beginning of this article.

Being close to the Alameda Park is also a good choice. Staying close to the train station might work if you are just in Santiago for a day or two and intend to travel onwards to other cities, such as Vigo or A Coruña.

However, anywhere that is within 15 minutes of walking distance to the Cathedral is a good location. Santiago is a safe city, so there are no obvious bad areas. You can also decide to stay close to the more modern parts of the city – this area has a lot of students.

Overall, the city has more than 300 hotels, which is quite a lot for a city of this size. It’s never hard to find a nice place to stay!

What to do in the city

The first thing to do is to visit the Cathedral. Do it immediately, because it’s the main attraction of the city.

The Cathedral has a museum related to it – also very interesting and highly recommended.

Take a walk around the old part of the city and enjoy the day. The streets are something special and there will be many interesting stores and cafés. In fact, it’s easy to spend a full day just wandering around.

Santiago de Compostela accommodation

In the western part of the centre, you’ll find the Alameda Park which is quite wonderful. A nice place to hang out and relax.

The San Francisco Convent should also be seen. You can eat really good food here, and it’s a nice place to be. Most travelers enjoy it.

Based on how much time you have in the city, you can visit some of the museums and monasteries. There are a lot of them!

We highly recommend a one day trip to Vigo as well. Make it a weekend trip if you have a lot of time available. If so, here is a guide to finding a hotel in Vigo.

Conclusion

It’s quite easy to find a nice hotel in Santiago de Compostela. Prices are reasonable, and many of the hotels offer good quality.

We hope this hotel guide was useful. If you have any questions, write them below and we will get back to you. If you have further recommendations that other readers would find useful, you’re also very welcome to share them.

Thanks for reading, and enjoy your journey to Santiago de Compostela!
